Not only does unforgiveness cripple us but it also hinders us from receiving the peace of mind we so desperately need. In particular, it cuts us off from the presence of God. Why is it that we take lightly the words of the gospel?
“But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins” (Matthew 6:15).
Do we realize unforgiveness can not only cut us off from the presence of God in this life but it also can have eternal consequences? Is any person or offense worth our very souls?!
I can recall during my first year of marriage I had a disturbing dream I could not soon forget. I was offended by my spouse and could not forgive. From the surface of things it appeared there were no concerns or problems in our marriage.
Within the dream, Jesus returned for His church and I was left behind. When I pleaded and asked him why He said,
“I cannot take you with all of that bitterness in your heart!”
When this dream became my reality it gave me more of a reason to forgive my ex spouse of the deception and habitual infidelity that marked the 6 years of our marriage.
Unforgiveness is to no advantage to us as it only causes bitterness to fester in our hearts and leaves us mentally and emotionally in the moment of the offense. We deserve peace and we can only receive it when we allow God to heal us from the inside out.
